Frankincense is a resin from the Boswellia tree. When the bark is cut, a milky sap flows out and hardens into an orange-brown gum, which is sold as rock incense. Alongside frankincense we carry myrrh resin, copal, dragon’s blood resin, Frank/Myrrh, and other rock incense such as Three Kings and Lion of Judah.
Resin is burned on charcoal in a heat-resistant burner, not lit like a stick. You will need a burner, charcoal and tongs, which we sell in ourincense holders and burners department. Light the charcoal, let it ash over, and place a few granules on top. Ventilate the room, and never leave burning charcoal unattended. Prefer sticks? Browse incense sticks, or see all rock incense.

Frankincense resin: Questions
What is frankincense resin?
Frankincense resin is the hardened sap of the Boswellia tree. When the bark is cut, a milky white sap flows out and hardens into an orange-brown gum. Sold as rock incense, it is burned on charcoal to release its fragrant smoke.
How do I burn frankincense resin?
Light a charcoal disc with tongs, let it sit until it is covered in grayish ash, then place a few granules of resin on top. The resin melts and releases fragrant smoke. Use a heat-resistant burner, ventilate the room, and never leave it unattended.
What do I need to burn resin?
You need a heat-resistant burner filled with sand or ash, charcoal discs, tongs, and a lighter or matches. Nicholas Brooklyn sells burners, charcoal and tongs, so you can pick up everything in one place. Start with a small amount of resin and add more if you want.
Which resins do you carry besides frankincense?
We carry myrrh, copal, dragon's blood, Frank/Myrrh, Three Kings, Lion of Judah, Jamaican Blend, 7 African Powers, Jerusalem and sandalwood rock incense. Stock changes, so check this page for what is available now, and ask in the shop if you are unsure.
Is frankincense resin the same as frankincense oil?
No. Resin is solid pieces burned on charcoal, while frankincense oil is a fragrance oil sold as both body oil and burning oil. We carry both, so you can choose between the resin and the oils in our fragrance body oils department.
Do you ship frankincense resin?
Yes. Nicholas Brooklyn ships nationwide, so you can order frankincense resin, myrrh and other rock incense online. The shipping policy page explains how shipping works, and you can call (718) 858-4400 if you have questions about your order.
